Overview

peru_baby

The Peruvian community in Southwestern PA is a very socially active group of people. They like to collaborate and be part of every project or group related to Latin American issues. The majority of Peruvians in Pittsburgh come from Lima, and you would also find some from Arequipa, Trujillo, Cuzco, Apurimac, Cajamarca, Huancayo, etc. The Peruvian group in Pittsburgh is comprised of a mixture of students, professionals and workers. You will find doctors, engineers, business people, cooks, waiters and students. There is no unique neighborhood where they live, many live in Oakland, Shadyside, and Squirrel Hill.

Peruvians celebrate their Independence Day on July 28, and also celebrate a religious festival called "El Señor de los Milagros" with a procession in Oakland around the Spanish mass service at St. Hyacinth Church. Christmas is also celebrated along with the Latin American Cultural Union (LACU) Christmas party. Some traditional dances from Peru are Valicha, Huaylash, La Marinera, Carnaval Arequipeño, Festejo, and Landó.

Immunization Action Coalition (IAC)
Vaccine Information Statements

The IAC works to increase immunization rates and prevent disease by creating and distributing educational materials for health professionals and the public that enhance the delivery of safe and effective immunization services. The Coalition also facilitates communication about the safety, efficacy, and use of vaccines within the broad immunization community of patients, parents, health care organizations, and government health agencies.

Click here for language specific Vaccine Information Statements (VIS). VIS are information sheets produced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that explain to vaccine recipients, their parents, or their legal representatives both the benefits and risks of a vaccine. Federal law requires that VIS be handed out whenever (before each dose) certain vaccinations are given.
