GlobalPittsburgh Celebration

A month’s worth of programs and activities are planned for September 2008 to highlight the Pittsburgh region’s international diversity - from both a cultural and business perspective - as part of the city’s 250th anniversary celebration.  

The celebration is designed to recognize members of Pittsburgh’s international community, who continue to play an essential role in enhancing the city’s atmosphere of innovation and entrepreneurship. Categories for the celebration include community, education, culture, sports, commerce and food. 

Major events include:

  • Sept. 6: The Ligonier Highland Games
  • Sept. 8-9: Pennsylvania International Week, which brings the state’s overseas trade representatives to Pittsburgh
  • Sept. 9: Pittsburgh Council for International Visitors’ International Bridge Awards Banquet
  • Sept. 16-17: Tthe launch of the Pittsburgh Middle East Institute featuring speaker Thomas Friedman
  • Sept. 22-29:  University of Pittsburgh International Week
  • The Penn Brewery Oktoberfest and many other events.

Celebrate GlobalPittsburgh

Emphasis also will be placed on spotlighting international companies that have established a presence in the Pittsburgh region, employing tens of thousands of people, and providing export opportunities for local businesses.

Partners in the GlobalPittsburgh Celebration include the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance, an affiliate of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, Pop City, University of Pittsburgh (Global Studies International Week), the British-American Business Council - Pittsburgh, and others.
